Nubian Nights: 3-Week Installation Guided by Jazz, Light & Love
After the success of Hatched: Breaking the Silence, the MF Dynamics team and collaborators have helped to illuminate another iconic Boston landmark. The project is titled Nubian Nights, and it features projected images timed to pre-recorded performances of jazz music onto various businesses in Nubian Square, including the Black Market, Nubian Gallery, and the Jazz Urbane Cafè (opening in 2022 at the Bolling Building!) Presented by Roxbury Cultural Art District, and envisioned by Daniel Callahan and Anita Morson-Matra, the MF Dynamics team lead the content capture and production elements, with window designs by Jane Long and video editing and projection by Hersch Visuals. The three-weekend multimedia experience began on March 26, and will be wrapping up this weekend!
Nubian Nights offers visitors the chance to experience the music of the Jazz Urbane Cafè’s roster of artists, an arts venue and community space that has had to delay its opening due to the COVID pandemic. Instead of experiencing the music inside the Cafè, the music can be enjoyed in the streets, accompanied by vibrant projected images that bring light and energy to the bustling square. Nubian Nights has not only delivered on its promise of bringing jazz, light and love to Roxbury, but on the heels of the 1-year anniversary of the pandemic, it has offered audience members a way to safely experience a live, curated performance. As the weather warms and public restrictions slowly begin to loosen, Nubian Nights could not have been more perfectly timed.
With the help of Epson and Luminartz, MF Dynamics was thrilled to collaborate with the other participating organizations on the design and implementation of Nubian Nights by bringing cutting edge laser projection technology, window art, outdoor speakers, and lighting to the Square. Those in the area (or those who want to make the trip!) have one more opportunity to experience Nubian Nights this weekend, Friday, April 9 through Sunday, April 11 from 7:00 - 10:00 PM.
